THE CARRIG-ROHANE FRAME SHOP A CARRIG-ROHANE/THULIN-MURPHY GILWOOD FRAME • Incised '1911 / Carrig - Rohane / Thulin-Murphy Co / Boston / 936' (on the reverse) • Rabbet size 1/2' width x 1' depth • 10 1/2' x 13 3/4' sight size • 19 4/5' x 23 x 1 3/5' outside dimensions Footnotes: N.B. The American painter Herman Dudley Murphy (1867 Marlborough, Massachusetts - 1945 Lexington, Massachusetts) opened the Frame Shop of Herman Dudley Murphy in 1903 with painter Charles Prendergast. The woodcarver Walfred Thulin would join in 1906. In 1911 the shop was incorporated as Thulin-Murphy Co. and Walfred Thulin became the President. In 1914 the shop was renamed Carrig-Rohane ('Red Cliff' in Gaelic). Murphy considered frames to be of equal import to the works they adorned, and he was the first American framemaker to sign and date his own frames. Murphy's customers included Emile Carlsen, Childe Hassam, and Frank W. Benson, among many others. In 1915 operations were moved to Vose Galleries in Boston, and in 1939 the shop was shut down. The frames that Murphy and his company produced, however, remain in collections all over the world as a reminder of the heyday of Murphy's revolutionary work. OVERALL CONDITION: Good. Wear consistent with age and use. This condition report is provided for your convenience based on the opinion of our cataloguers. It is not a comprehensive condition report and if you require more detailed information, please contact us. Lots are sold on an 'as is' basis, with all faults and imperfections.
