A 28-Bore Flintlock Duelling Pistol By Twigg, London, Circa 1775 With rebrowned twist octagonal sighted barrel signed along the top flat, engraved with a line of beadwork at the rear of the breech and with gold-lined touch-hole, tang engraved with foliage, flat bevelled lock cusped behind the pan and with second form of signature, roller bearing on a ramp on the steel-spring, figured full stock (fore-end with old repairs) carved in relief with a shell behind the barrel tang, chequered rounded flat-sided butt with a dot in the centre of each diamond, steel trigger-guard with acorn finial and decorated with a flower-head in a diamond-shaped panel on the border engraved bow, border engraved silver-escutcheon with owner's crest, adjustable set trigger, turned ramrod-pipes (forward one replaced), and horn-tipped ramrod with iron worm (some old wear and rust patination), London proof marks and Twigg's barrelsmith's mark 25.4 cm. barrel Footnotes: John Fox Twigg was born in Grantham, Lincolnshire in 1732. He is recorded at various addresses in London between 1755 and the year of his death in 1790. Durs Egg worked for him on his arrival in London 1772 and John Manton served as his foreman. He is considered to be one of the founding fathers of the English gun making trade The crest is that of the Delaval family of Seaton Delaval, Northumberland or of the Capper family of Bushey Park and Bournehall Manor, Hertfordshire.
