WASHINGTON, GEORGE. 1732-1799. TRUMBULL, JOHN, after. General Washington. London: Valentine Green, January 15th, 1781. Mezzotint on paper, 634 x 405 mm, matted and framed. Trimmed close to lower platemark, light creases, a few closed tears, 2 briefly affecting image, others in margin only, small piece from top margin, faint spots in margin. This engraved portrait of Washington and his servant Billy Lee by Valentine Green was one of the first portraits seen by most Europeans and was based on a painting by John Trumbull. Trumbull had been Washington's second personal aide until he resigned his post in 1777. This, his first portrait of the General was done from memory in 1780. See Stan V. Henkels, The Hampton L.
