A KATHY GROVE PORTRAIT OF CYNDI LAUPER FOR THE FEBRUARY 1989 DETAILS COVER. GROVE, KATHY. B.1948. Original airbrush pigment on paper, portrait of Cyndi Lauper for Details, 505 x 410 mm, laid down to 560 x 460 mm board, with mylar overlay. WITH: two copies of the February 1989 issue of Details, one with the printed overlay, one without. AND WITH: a selection of Cyndi Lauper ephemera, including slides and contact proofs from a 1996 photo shoot, miscellaneous tour books, and other ephemera. One of Annie Flanders' last issues as Editor-in-chief of Details featured a cover image of a painting of Cyndi Lauper in the style of a Vargas girl by artist Kathy Grove after a photograph by Caroline Greyshock. In the photoshoot, Lauper was styled by Laura Willis, with hair by Justin Ware and makeup by Jody Morlock. The February 1989 issue featured an interview of Lauper by Allie Willis titled 'Girls Just Want to Have Glasnost,' regarding Lauper's recent trip to Moscow where she participated in a rock-and-roll exchange program. Kathy Grove is a conceptual feminist photographer who began her career as a photo retoucher for fashion magazines. The airbrushing and photo manipulation techniques she learned working in fashion is now used in her own work to altar the appearance or edit out figures from famous photographs.
