Jules Tavernier (1844-1889) St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Hilo, Hawaiʻi signed, dated and inscribed 'Jules Tavernier / Hilo 87' (lower right) oil on canvas 12 x 18 in. (30.5 x 45.7 cm) Painted in 1887. Footnotes: Provenance The Estate of Betty Hoag McGlynn. Trotter Galleries, Carmel, California. Private collection, Monterey, California. Exhibited Monterey, Monterey Museum of Art, Jules Tavernier: Paintings from the Collection of Betty Hoag McGlynn, February 2002 - November 2006. Literature Claudine Chalmers, Scott A. Shields, and Alfred C. Harrison, Jr., Jules Tavernier: Artist and Adventurer, Sacramento, Crocker Art Museum, 2013, p. 149, illustrated. By 1885, Tavernier along with his wife Lizzie and younger stepsister, Mary Shelton were living in an abandoned grocery store in Hilo. The town and environs presented a number of subjects that Tavernier with his past travels documenting everyday life on the plains and the in the West must have found irresistible.
