John William Hilton (1904-1983) High Tide (Ho Nau Nau Near the City of Refuge, Hawai'i) signed 'John W. Hilton' (lower right), signed again, titled and dated '73-2-13' (on the reverse) oil on Masonite 20 x 30 in. (50.8 x 76.2 cm) Painted in 1973. Footnotes: Provenance Sale, Clars Auction Gallery, Oakland, Fall Collectibles Auction, 13 October 2023, lot 498A. Private collection, Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. John W. Hilton is best known as a desert painter of the American Southwest. By the late 1960s, however, having achieved commercial success, he bought a second home in Lahaina, Maui. The present work dates to this period when Hilton expanded his repertoire, working between his residence in Twenty-nine Palms, California, and Lahaina. High Tide exhibits Hilton's characteristic palette knife technique and high-keyed palette to capture atmospheric light effects. The present work depicts a house near Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park, the royal and sacred grounds on the south coast of Kona, Hawaiʻi. The site served until the early 19th Century as a puʻuhonua or place of refuge during battle or absolution by a priest for breaking a kapu or ancient law.
