Private collection, New York, New York and Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, 2005, acquired from the above. The present work exemplifies Betty Ecke's dsui hua (assembled paintings) technique from the height of her career. Dsui hua drew upon her extensive use of a variety of media as well as classical Chinese painting and mounting techniques. Ecke created her own rice paper which she meticulously tore and arranged freehand for her compositions. While all of her dsui hua compositions relied on spontaneity, some showed a more pre-determined structure in capturing the landscape and natural phenomenon, such as Before Darkness.
