David Howard Hitchcock (1861-1943) Hanalei Valley, Kauaʻi signed, inscribed and dated 'D Howard Hitchcock H·I· 1914' (lower right) oil on linen 16 x 30 1/4 in. (40.6 x 76.8 cm) In a Koa wood frame. Painted in 1914. Footnotes: Provenance Private collection, New York. Sale, Doyle, New York, American Paintings, Furniture & Decorative Arts, December 9, 2020, lot 75. Acquired from the above by the present owner. D. Howard Hitchcock first visited Kauaʻi in 1906 on a sketching, tramping and camping trip with the Theosophist Augustus Francis Knudsen (1869-1944). The Knudsen family owned and operated a large sugar plantation at Koloa, and over the next two decades, Hitchcock would return to Kauaʻi as a guest of the Knudsens to paint the island's scenery. Most notably, Hitchcock painted monumental views of Hanalei Bay and Waimea Canyon. Although several of the Knudsen family paintings were damaged from Hurricane Iwa in 1982, the family sold several of the surviving works dated from 1909 to 1915. One work, probably conceived on that first trip to Kauaʻi is a large, dramatic landscape of Waimea Canyon in permanent collection of the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum. Saleroom notices: Please note that the frame wood is quartersawn oak. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com For further information about this lot please visit the lot listing
