Madge Tennent (1889-1972) Still Life (Grass Skirt, Pāreu and Kava Bowl) signed, titled and inscribed 'by Madge Tennent' in a depiction of the former backing (affixed to the reverse) oil on canvas laid to board 18 1/2 x 20 1/4 in. (47 x 51.4 cm) Painted circa 1928. Footnotes: Provenance The artist. The Collection of Clifford Gessler (1893-1979), acquired from the above. The Collection of Donald Hibbard Angus (1908-2001), acquired from the above. The Collection of Frances 'Patches' Damon Holt (1918-2003), acquired from the above. Honolulu Museum of Art, gift from the above. Private collection, Honolulu, Hawai'i, deaccessioned from the above. Literature Arthur Tennent, The Art and Writing of Madge Tennent, Honolulu, Island Heritage, 1977, p. 65, illustrated (as 'Polynesian Still Life'). The present work is an early work from the late 1920s conceived during her trip to Hawai'i from Australia and during a stopover in Samoa. Madge Tennent oils are rarely on the market because the estate was mostly intact when it was given to the Isaacs Art Center in Waimea.
