Leon Rene Pescheret (1892-1971) House Without a Key - Honolulu, c. 1940s Etching and aquatint in colors on wove paper, signed in pencil and titled, with margins, framed in Koa wood. plate 8 x 6 3/8in (20.3 x 16.2cm) sheet 12 3/4 x 11 1/4in (32.4 x 28.6cm) Footnotes: Provenance Private collection, Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. House Without a Key references a historical place, an architectural element, and a state of mind. The present work depicts a gathering in a lānai — a covered open-sided structure unique to Hawaiʻi that is an extension of the home and expression of Aloha spirit. The moniker 'House Without a Key' was originally given to the lānai at a boarding house called Gray's-By-The-Sea in Waikīkī. The property was acquired by the Halekulani Hotel in 1926, and it has kept this name colloquially ever since.
