Two pairs of Scottish silver and agate cufflinks, mid 18th century Each with oval polished agates set in scalloped silver mount together with three single cufflinks of the same type and another with backed crystals (8) Footnotes: For comparable examples set with Scottish agates see Rosalind K Marshall, The Art of Jewellery in Scotland, 1991, Scottish National Portrait Gallery, page 50. A pair is illustrated which belonged to James Sandilands, Master of Torphichen and an officer in the 44th Foot. In 1745, at the height of the Jacobite rising, he was badly injured at the Battle of Prestonpans and his butler who thought he was dead removed his silver and agate sleeve links.
