Large Deep Purple Fluorite Surprise Mine, Cooks Peaks, Luna County, New Mexico, USA The Surprise Mine is part of the Cookes Mountain Mining District that was established in the late 19th century and produced lead, zinc, and silver until 1967. It also produced fluorite specimens such as this one, which commonly consist of green to purple octahedra with dimpled surfaces. A good example from a historic southwest USA locality.
