Rhodochrosite Crystal Sweet Home Mine, Alma, Park Co., Colorado, USA The Sweet Home Mine was originally a silver mine that was intermittently worked from the late 19th century until the mid 1960s for that metal. Inspired by the find of the 'Alma Queen' rhodochrosite specimen, now at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, a consortium reopened the Sweet Home as a full-size mining operation in 1991, only this time, specifically for mineral specimens. The specimen recovery operation lasted until 2004 and in that time, the miners produced many fine rhodochrosite specimens of intense, deep red color, such as this crystal exhibits. Sweet Home rhodochrosite was an instant hit on the market when the first specimens arrived, and have since become highly desired 'must-haves' for a mineral collection.
