The inscription on the reverse of the painting of the three-masted ship reads: In Memoriam / A stately bark sailed out to sea, / On a golden day for a distance shore; / And the sun-blest waves sang sweet to me, / 'Adieu thou lone loving one', o'er and o'er. / And the emerald isles of the shining bay / Sparkled and smiled as the white sails passed / Shall I live in thy memory when far away, / Like the ocean bark I am gone at last? / ---- Fred. The inscription on the reverse of the painting of the tropical island and birds reads: Eternal summer of the tropic world! / How rich and rare thy never-dying verdure / Clings to the memory of this northern wanderer - / How thy long, wondrous days flow downward / With the sun at eve, nor deigned to bless / Thy region with a twilight hour. / Ah well! the glory of the sun-god / Will ever deck thine endless season; / And though the splendid orb cuts off / Thine every daylight with a quick adieu - / He fills thy sky and ocean with his gorgeous smile / And floods thy palmy islands in a bath of gold. / --- F.N.
