PETER ELLENSHAW (American, 1913-2007) Ocean Waves signed and dated 'Peter Ellenshaw 64' (lower left); inscribed '43' and stamped '© PETER ELLENSHAW' (on the reverse) acrylic on Masonite 6 x 10 in (15.2 x 25.4 cm)framed 12 3/4 x 16 3/4 x 2 1/2 in (32.4 x 42.5 x 6.4 cm) Footnotes: N.B. Peter Ellenshaw worked for many decades as a special-effects matte painter in the film industry. From the early 1930s until the late 1940s, he worked with the Hungarian-born British film director Alexander Korda (1893-1956), the British filmmaking duo Michael Powell (1905-1990) and Emeric Pressburger (1902-1988), and MGM Studios on various projects. He was most involved, however, with Walt Disney Studios. Ellenshaw first met Walt Disney in 1948 while Disney was beginning work on Treasure Island, which would be Disney's first completely live-action picture. Disney hand-selected Ellenshaw to create background scenes for the film. Treasure Island marked the beginning of a long and prolific association with Disney. Ellenshaw's filmography with Disney includes Treasure Island (1950), 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954), Swiss Family Robinson (1960), Mary Poppins (1964), The Black Hole (1979), and Dick Tracy (1990), among others. He received five Academy Award nominations during his career and received the Academy Award for Best Special Effects for his work on Mary Poppins. After retiring from the film business, Ellenshaw turned his focus to painting. Ellenshaw's son, Harrison Ellenshaw (born 1945), followed in his father's footsteps. His work can be seen in films including Star Wars (1977), Tron (1982), and The Empire Strikes Back (1980).
