HARRY JACKSON (American, 1924-2011) Iroquois Guide II signed and dated '© Harry Jackson 1980' (in paint on top of the bronze base); signed and dated '© Harry Jackson 1980' and titled and number 'IG II P 28 P' (incised on the bronze base); with Wyoming Foundry Studios foundry mark and the artist's thumbprint (impressed below left of the base inscription) painted bronze height 14 1/2 in (36.5 cm) on an oval black marble plinthbase length 8 in (20.3 cm)base width 4 in (10.2 cm) Footnotes: Provenance The collection of Joseph Thomas Alvarez III, California. N.B. In 1964, Harry Jackson was commissioned by Fort Pitt, Pittsburg, to create a life-size mural titled River, Road, and Point which would commemorate William Pitt's triumph over the French in the French and Indian Wars. However, due to risks of flooding from the Ohio River, the mural was never completed. Instead, Jackson recreated certain figures from within the murals as colorful, vividly animated sculptures, as if one had stepped into the two-dimensional space of the mural to experience its actors in the flesh. Jackson wrote, 'I had the sculptures of the major figures specifically act out in detail what they would be within the illusionary three-dimensional space of the mural.'1 Here the rugged Iroquois guide, vigilant from beneath the folds of his red blanket, cradles his rifle as he trudges through the snow which clings to his fur boots. 1 L. Pointer and D. Goddard, Harry Jackson, New York, New York, 1981, p. 235.
