WARREN WHEELOCK (American, 1880-1960) Madame signed 'wheelock' (on the top of base); titled and identified in an inscription (on the underside of the plinth) painted teak height 32 1/2 in (82.6 cm), on a wood plinth Footnotes: Provenance Sotheby's, New York, American Paintings, March 23, 2005, Lot 156. Exhibited New York, The Society of Independent Artists, Grand Central Palace, 1931, no. 1066. N.B After serving in the Spanish-American War, Warren Wheelock studied at the Pratt Institute where he later taught as a drawing instructor until 1910. Shortly afterwards, he relocated to the Blue Ridge Mountains where for five years he developed his artistic abilities, studying folklore and learning to carve. Thereafter, Wheelock focused on sculpture, creating both abstract and figural works. Throughout the 1920's he regularly exhibited in New York and was a founding member of the Society of Independent Artists. Using a hickory mallet, Wheelock chiseled each sculpture from a single block of wood.
