George Demont Otis (1879-1962) Sycamores at El Aliso signed 'Geo Demont Otis' (lower right) and titled (on the stretcher bar) oil on canvas 24 x 30 in. framed 31 x 37 in. Painted circa 1923. Footnotes: Provenance The Collection of Grace V. Hartley. Private collection, Northern California. A note affixed to the reverse from the George Demont Otis Foundation states that the present work was painted in the early 1920s at the Charles Lummis home on the road to Pasadena. This was a center for artists, authors, and civic leaders. Lummis wrote and published articles of historic interest and did much to promote culture in Southern California. Otis was a welcome guest at the Lummis center where a grove of Sycamores grew in the canyon.
