Jean Hippolyte Marchand (French, 1883-1940) Interieur (Aix) bears signature 'J Marchand' (lower left) oil on canvas 65.4 x 81.9 cm. (25 3/4 x 32 1/4 in.) Shone, The Art of Bloomsbury: Roger Fry, Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, London, 1999, p.205, pl.120 (ill.b&w). Fry painted his version whilst staying with Marchand and his wife, the painter Sonia Lewitska, and the sculptor Marcel Gimond and his wife Julie in Vence. Fry was a keen supporter of Marchand, dedicating a chapter to him in his 1920 book Vision and Design, and selecting Marchand's work for inclusion in both of Fry's groundbreaking exhibitions held at the Grafton Galleries; Manet and the Post-Impressionists, 1910 and The Second Post Impressionist Exhibition, 1912. When exhibited in 1967, this work was believed to date to 1936, yet Roger Fry's variation of the scene is dated 1920. We are grateful to Richard Shone for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
