Vanessa Bell (British, 1879-1961) Angelica Garnett and Her Four Daughters oil on paper, squared for transfer 50.8 x 68.5 cm. (20 x 27 in.) Painted circa 1957 Footnotes: Provenance Private Collection, U.S.A. The present work depicts Bell's daughter Angelica Garnett with Amaryllis, Henrietta and the twins Nerissa and Frances, posed in the sitting room of Charleston. Behind Angelica is a painted screen by Grant, and above the group hangs Bell's copy of Vlaminck's Poissy le Pont (Bell had sold the original in the early 50s). This work is a preparatory study for the oil of the same subject, which is now in the collection of The Charleston Trust. There is a partial work verso, also by Bell, which is a portrait of an unknown sitter. We are grateful to Richard Shone for his assistance in cataloguing this work.
