Catherine Walker (1945-2010) for The Chelsea Design Company Black Evening Gown with Princess Diana Interest, c.1987 Black silk crepe de chine column gown with a sweetheart neckline and internal bodice Labelled size 14 but custom fit, bust 32', waist 32', 145cm long accompanied by the programme for 'A Pink and Black Gala Evening at Claridge's', Monday 28th September 1987 Footnotes: This dress was made by Catherine Walker for London textile designer, Jacquetta Rogers, who worked closely with the fashion designer at The Chelsea Design Company. Rogers needed a dress for a Pink and Black-themed Fundraising Evening at Claridge's Hotel in September 1987, which Princess Diana was attending, and fell in love with this piece. As a member of the event committee, Ms Rogers stood in line to greet the guest-of-honour at the gala event, and was mortified to see that Princess Diana was wearing the same Catherine Walker dress. When they came face to face in the line, Princess Diana took the potentially awkward encounter in her stride, and said, 'snap! You dance at one end, and I'll dance at the other'. A photographer friend of Ms Rogers took two photographs on the two women in the same dress; the photographs never went to press, but she kept the proofs. While it was an incredible coincidence that Princess Diana wore the same dress, Catherine Walker was one of her favourite designers, and was the creator of many of Diana's iconic looks throughout the 1980s and 90s.
