David Oxtoby (born 1938) A Customised Gibson Les Paul Junior Electric Guitar, 2007, the body covered with a piece of blue denim, the reverse painted blue and inscribed Rock & Roll Kid, memorandum, and signed and dated by the artist, in hard case, 99cm (39in) long Footnotes: Created for the 2007 Born To Rock: The Life and Times of the Electric Guitar exhibition at Harrods, which featured over 150 guitars, including those played by Jimi Hendrix, Muddy Waters and Van Morrison as well as some specially created for the exhibition by the biggest names in music, design, photography and art, such as Bono, Peter Blake and Blur's Graham Coxon. The exhibition literature quoted David Oxtoby as saying that the guitar '...harks back to the early days of rock 'n' roll using methods of application learnt whilst working as an outside display artist and scenery painter for a signwriting firm at Leeds Grand Theatre. Materials are also indicative of the era - the staples and staplegun were purchased in Minneapolis in 1964 and the jeans from a Notting Hill store in the early 1970s.'
