BALDWIN (JAMES) Go Tell it on the Mountain, FIRST EDITION, ADVANCE REVIEW COPY, with typed review slip dated 2 February 1953 from William Cole at Knopf loosely inserted, front hinge loosening, publisher's illustrated wrappers, spine slightly faded and with small chip at head, lower cover with some soiling and browning, 8vo, New York, Dial Press, 1956 Footnotes: 'We think Mr. Baldwin is one of today's three or four exciting young novelists' (William Cole). A fine early advance review copy of Baldwin's first novel, a landmark in the history of African American literature, printed some four months prior to publication in May 1953. When it came to publication, the present cover design was rejected by Baldwin, who felt it to be too stereotypical.
