MACINNES (COLIN) Autograph working manuscript of No Novel Reader, signed dedication on first page ('For Mimi/ from Colin/ Jany 75'), written in pencil on rectos only, with numerous amendments, additions and deletions in black pen, interspersed with additional revised pages, 77 numbered leaves, some numbers duplicated, others marked 'a', on various lined and plain papers, some with filing holes, dust-staining, creases and marks, folio (324 x 205mm.) and 4to (258 x 205mm.), held loose in a buff folder titled 'Colin MacInnes', [n.p.], August 1974 Footnotes: Colin MacInnes (1914-1976) is best known for his books depicting the teenage phenomenon and black immigrant culture during the 1950's, particularly the 'London Trilogy' which included Absolute Beginners. His No Novel Reader was declared '...as good as anything he had ever written... a celebration of the novel as an art-form, typically penetrating and perverse, with a fascinating account of his own development as a novelist...' (Colin MacInnes obituary, Freedom anarchist fortnightly, vol.37, no.10, 15 May 1976). The dedicatee of the manuscript may have been Mimi O'Keeffe, wife of MacInnes' publisher Timothy O'Keeffe. Their correspondence and a carbon typescript of this work is held at the Rush Rhees Library, University of Rochester, NY (D.140).
