The Railways and Principal Roads..., hand-coloured engraved map by J. Dower on 4 sheets, each sheet comprising 24 sections mounted on linen, second edition, with large calligraphic title surmounted by the arms of the dedicatee Prince Albert, inset map of the Shetland and Orkney Islands, 7 geological cross-sections, 2 diagrams of artesian wells and a reference key, each sheet with a small printed outline map mounted on marbled endpapers, folding into contemporary green morocco map case with the arms of the Prince Consort stamped in gilt, extremities rubbed, wanting lid, each sheet 805 x 680mm., Stanford, Grant & Griffith... (Late Harris) and Edinburgh, W. & A.K. Johnston, 1859 Footnotes: A FINE CLEAN COPY OF KNIPE'S STRIKING AND IMPORTANT GEOLOGICAL MAP. The map was first published in 1843 and went through various issues before a second edition was published in 1851. This was also reissued at intervals as fresh data was collected from fieldwork and became available. Our 1859 edition has a printed list of illustrious 'authorities consulted', notably Smith, Greenough, Lyell, Mantell and Murchison, with a brief postscript dated 1857.
