'Siesta in Xbalba' is a long hallucinatory poem Ginsberg wrote in Mexico in 1954. He personally ran off some fifty-three copies whilst on board a Navy freight ship off the coast of Alaska, thirteen of which he sent to his publisher to sell at 50 cents each, with the remainder retained by Ginsberg for presentation over the years. Provenance: Gary Snyder (born 1930), American poet, writer and environmental activist sometimes referred to as the 'poet laureate of Deep Ecology', with his signature and inscribed to him by Ginsberg. Snyder was initially associated with the Beat Generation, largely inspired Jack Kerouac's main character in The Dharma Bums, and had travelled extensively over the years with Ginsberg. In 1966, jointly with two others, Snyder and Ginsberg bought some land in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, Northern California; Snyder named his portion of the land Kitkitdizze and moved there in 1970.
