Streater, for Henry Twiford, George Sawbridge, Thomas Dring and John Place, 1657 Footnotes: A good copy of one of the first printed histories of London, by the versatile Welsh author, royalist, politician and traveller, James Howell. It was written following his release from a lengthy imprisonment at the time of the Interregnum. Provenance: James Whatman of the paper-making family, armorial bookplate. James Whatman the Elder (1702-1759) was the inventor of wove paper for printing and artwork, an innovation which paved the way for the industrialisation of paper manufacturing. His son, also James Whatman (1741-1798), continued his father's work and made further refinements. This bookplate probably dates from his time.
