Lear notes in the preface 'I have executed the whole of the Lithographic drawings from my own sketches, and have endeavoured to preserve a close fidelity to the Originals'. 'Queen Victoria, one of the subscribers, was so impressed with the work that she invited Lear to give her a series of twelve drawing lessons' (ODNB).
