MAILER (NORMAN) Advertisements for Myself, first UK edition, PRESENTATION COPY TO MALCOLM MUGGERIDGE, inscribed in red pen on title-page 'To Malcolm/ encore aux barricades/ Norman M.', and with Malcolm Muggeridges's bookplate, his hand-drawn map in red ink on front free endpaper, marking the position of 63 Gloucester Terrace, and his notes in preparation for an interview filling fly-leaves at end (4pp., also in red ink), publisher's black cloth, dust-jacket (slightly worn at edges with one or two small chips, some soiling to upper edge of flaps, a little light foxing mostly onnly visible on reverse), 8vo, Andre Deutsch, 1961 Footnotes: Presentation copy of Mailer's ground-breaking book, inscribed by the great American novelist and journalist to one of his frequent co-panelists and interviewer, the British broadcaster and journalist Malcolm Muggeridge. The collection of stories, essays, musings and interviews was Mailer's most provocative and influential work in terms of 'hip' counterculture, literature and politics. It's not evident for whom the map was drawn, but 63 Gloucester Terrace (known as 'the cleverest street in London') was bought in 1961 by Jonathan Miller, who let the basement to Alan Bennett for a time. Mailer, Muggeridge and to a lesser extent Miller were familiar figures on television talk shows and in newspapers, and Muggeridge often interviewed Mailer, so we can only assume the notes were in preparation for one of these interviews. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: • • Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium.
