'We found a poem, a beauty, by a poet - so much so that it must be printed by itself. Irishman of 23, Ecole Normale here, that's all I know, but am seeing him tomorrow' (Nancy Cunard, letter to Louise Morgan, June 1930). The 98 line poem, based on the life of Descartes, was submitted at the last minute to Nancy Cunard's competition to find the best poem on the theme of time, winning Beckett the sum of ten pounds. Three hundred copies were printed, 100 of which were signed. The present copy is one of the 100 unsigned copies, preserving the rare wrap-around band.
