EUCLID - MOVEABLE PARTS COWLEY (JOHN LODGE) An Appendix to Euclid's Elements. In Seven Books. Containing Forty-Two Copper-Plates. In which the Doctrine of Solids, delivered in the XIth, XIIth, and XVth Books of Euclid, is illustrated, and rendered easy by New-invented Schemes cut out of Paste-Board, FIRST EDITION, woodcut ornament on title, 42 engraved plates on thick 'paste-board' paper (all partially slit as intended for use as pop-out three-dimensional figures, plate 38 with one diagram cut out and missing, 5 with small tab on verso attaching diagram), early ink calculations in margin of 5 plates, one word annotation (i.e. 'Tetraexaedron') within platemark of 2 plates, and words 'Book 1' or 'Book 2' added in ink upper right within platemark of plates 1 to 9, occasional light spotting, contemporary half calf over marbled boards, very worn with upper cover near detached, spine splitting, original gilt morocco spine label ('Cowley's Euclid') loose, 4to, Sold by Mr. Watkins... Mr. Ayscough, Optical Instrument-makers... M. Bennett, Mathematical Instrument-makers, and by the Author, 1758 Footnotes: Scarce edition of Euclid illustrated with 42 plates designed to be folded into three-dimensional pop-up figures, the accompanying text containing step-by-step instructions for folding the figures. This copy, annotated with mathematical calculations, and with the plates carefully cut shows how the an early reader engaged with the volume. John Lodge Cowley (1719-1797) was for some years professor of mathematics at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, and a Fellow of the Royal Society in London. Provenance: 'John Slade from William Marstin 1759', ownership inscription on title-page; Henry S. Pitcher, pencil inscription on front free endpaper.
