The artist Bhupen Khakhar (1934-2003) 'played a central role in modern Indian art and was a key international figure in 20th century painting' (Tate, website). His portrait of Salman Rushdie titled 'The Moor', was exhibited at the Tate retrospective (June-November 2016), and is owned by the National Portrait Gallery.
