It was Ezra Pound, the journal's 'foreign correspondent,' who convinced the editors, Anderson and Heap, to serialize the work. They ran 23 instalments covering the narrative from the 'Telemachus' episode (Chapter 1, March 1918 - included in this lot) through to the first portion of 'Oxen in the Sun' (Chapter 14, September-December 1920). This led to the obscenity trial which took place in 1921 and effectively banned publication of Joyce's novel in the United States. Included in the present lot are 17 instalments of Ulysses (March to July 1918, October 1918, February-March to July 1919, September 1919, November 1919, January 1920, March 1920, April 1920, July-August 1920).
