A pair of George III silver wine coasters Henry Hobdell, London 1780 Circular form with bead rims, the open-work sides with vertical slats, applied in relief classical female oval medallions and flower head roundels, oval disc cartouche with engraved crest below a Ducal coronet, the silver interiors centred with an engraved shield shaped armorial, diameter 12.5cm. (2) Footnotes: Provenance: With Mary Cooke Antiques Limited 2011 The Patrick and Mavis Walker Silver Collection These are the arms of Samuel THORNTON (1754-1838) of Clapham Surrey and his wife Elizabeth MILNES (1758-1834) daughter of Robert MILNES (1718-1771) of Fryston Hall, Wakefield by Joyce SLATER (1733-1764). In 1780 they were married at Wakefield and as a result this item is likely to been a marriage piece. Their marriage produced twelve children. Samuel THORNTON was the eldest son of John THORNTON (1720-1790) by Lucy WATSON () daughter of Samuel WATSON (1689-1770) of Hull by Margaret HOGHTON (1681-1775). John THORNTON was a wealthy merchant in the Russian and Baltic trade. From 1780 Samuel was a Director of the Bank of England becoming Deputy Governor and later Governor 1799-1801. In the period 1784-1806 he was jointly the MP for Kingston on Hull with William WILBERFORCE and 1797-1812 for Surrey. He was renowned as an abolitionist and social reformer. As a member of the Clapham Sect with William WILBERFORCE, he lived in Clapham (1780-1840), he purchased in 1800 Albury Park in Clapham.
