Shams-al-Din Iltumish, Sultan of Delhi (reg. 1211-36) Delhi, circa 1900 gouache and gold on paper, laid down on an album page with extensive inscriptions in Persian in nasta'liq script in black ink painting 184 x 118 mm.; album page 298 x 202 mm. Footnotes: Provenance Private UK collection. The inscriptions are as follows: In the upper border: 'The Noble Portrait of Sultan Shams al-Din Iltumish Padshah'. In the lower border: 'The year of the accession to the throne, the year 607 of the hijra [AD 1270-71]'; and 'The year of death, 20 Sha'ban, the year 633 of the hijra [29th April 1236]'. The inscriptions in the left and right borders are in an Indian language, one of which has been partially deciphered: 'The account of the accession to the throne'; on the other side, the word 'death' appears, presumably dealing with the Sultan's biographical details.
