A Damascus pottery vase mounted as a mosque lamp Syria, the vase 17th Century, the mounts 19th Century or later the pottery body of globular form, decorated underglaze in green, cobalt blue and black on a white ground with foliate scrollwork, the later copper mounts with geometric and calligraphic openwork decoration; with a letter from Oliver Watson dated the 7th of October 1994 32 cm. high(2) Footnotes: Inscriptions: including the repeat of, al-'alima, (sic) [al-'alim], ' the learned'; and possibly al-ghazi, 'the warrior, and al-maliki, 'The possessor'. Dr Oliver Watson (1949-2023) was an expert in Islamic pottery and the former Chief Curator of the Department of Ceramics and Glass at the Victoria and Albert Museum. He also wrote extensively on the subject, including his 2004 publication Ceramics from Islamic Lands.
