A glass jar probably Syria, 7th-8th Century of green glass and globular form with a flaring neck and applied base, the body decorated with a row of three applied prunts 5.5 cm. high Footnotes: Provenance Private collection, New York, acquired at Lion's Gate Bazaar, Jerusalam, 1985. Anonymous sale; Christie's, New York, 12 December 2002, lot 434 (part). Property from a Princely Collection, acquired at the above sale. Stefano Carboni dates the known category of small globular glass vessels with applied monochromatic decoration to approximately the seventh to the eighth century, i.e. the proto-Islamic period, in the Syrian region. He suggests that within this category, the vessels with large mouths such as the present lot were likely to be pouring vessels for liquids. For a similar vessel, see Stefano Carboni, Glass from Islamic Lands, London: Thames & Hudson, in association with The al-Sabah Collection, Dar al-Athat al-Islamiyyah, Kuwait National Museum, 2001, p.27, cat. 5a,b.
