A Kashan monochrome composite pottery rider on horseback Persia, 12th/ 13th Century the horse standing upright on four legs and a flat base, the rider with reins in one hand and a spout-shaped opening to the top of the head, decorated with moulded details, accompanying Japanese wood storage box 30.4 cm. high(2) Footnotes: A figure of similar form with black underglaze decoration was sold at Sotheby's, A Princely Collection: Treasures from the Islamic World, 5 October 2010 (lot 82). Ernst J. Grube has referred to the twelfth and thirteenth centuries in Seljuk Persia as 'the most productive [period] in the history of Islamic ceramic-making,' with a significant boom in the production of 'portable objects' beginning in the late Seljuk period (Ernst J. Grube, Islamic Pottery of the Eighth to the Fifteenth Century in the Keir Collection, London: Faber & Faber, 1976, p.158). Monochrome-glazed wares, moulded relief decoration, and small figural, zoomorphic, and architectural models were all popular forms during this period.
