The moralising story of Sultan Sanjar and the old woman appears in Nizami's Makhzan al-asrar, The Treasury of Mysteries (part of the Khamsa). An illustration of the behaviour of rulers towards their subjects, it was a popular scene: perhaps the best-known depiction is the painting of 1539-43 from Shah Tahmasp's Khamsa (now in the British Library).
