A lithograph portrait of Cem Sultan (1459-95), youngest son of Sultan Mehmet II, the Conqueror Bernard-Romain Julien (1802-71), after Court, published by E. Gambart, Paris, circa 1840 hand-coloured lithograph 58 x 44 cm. Footnotes: Cem (or Djem) Sultan was blocked from succeeding to the throne by his brother Bajazet, and spent most of his life in exile. In 1482 he travelled to Nice and later spent some time in France, as a well looked-after prisoner and a pawn in European-Ottoman relations. He died in Italy. He was an accomplished poet in Turkish and Persian.
