c.1959 Royal Enfield 248cc Crusader 'Airflow' Registration no. NSD 272 (see text) Frame no. 12644 Engine no. 3504 Introduced in 1956, the all-new Crusader 250 was unusual in having a unitary construction engine at a time when most British machines still employed a separate gearbox, and in placing the camshaft drive outboard of the primary chain on the engine's left-hand side. The gears were housed in their own compartment at the rear of the streamlined crankcase casting, which also contained the engine oil tank in typical Enfield fashion. The cycle parts consisted of an open-type swinging-arm frame, telescopic front fork and 17' wheels at front and rear. Over the next decade numerous variations were produced on the Crusader theme, culminating in the Continental GT of 1964. Before then, Royal Enfield had offered the Airflow touring fairing and its associated voluminous front mudguard, a combination that first appeared on the Crusader in 1958. As well as providing excellent weather protection for the rider, the glassfibre Airflow also offered a small amount of stowage space. This rare Royal Enfield model was acquired by the vendor over 30 years ago, since when it has been kept in dry storage. Recommissioning will be required before the machine returns to the road and thus it is sold strictly as viewed (the engine turns over). It should be noted that the registration 'NSD 272' does not appear on the HPI database; thus this motorcycle is offered unregistered and without documents. Key not required Footnotes: All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.
