1959 Ariel 350cc Red Hunter Registration no. VDK 110 Frame no. CAPR13182 Engine no. CAMA5099 By 1930, Ariel's Val Page-designed singles had gained a rear-mounted magneto and their distinctive timing cover, and this basic engine design would last well into the post-war era. The sports versions were designated 'Red Hunter' and under Page's successor Edward Turner developed into fast and stylish machines. In 1946 the Hunters became the first models to feature Ariel's new telescopic front fork, and the following year could be ordered with optional Anstey Link plunger rear suspension. A new duplex loop frame with swinging-arm rear suspension was adopted for 1954, the 500cc VH gaining an alloy 'head at the same time. Full-width alloy hubs were adopted across the range in 1956, and the Red Hunters continued in this form until production ceased in 1959. This matching-numbers Red Hunter comes with its original old-style logbook, showing that it was retailed by Ben Drinkwater Ltd of Rochdale, and its original guarantee form in the name of Mr George Howarth of Royton, Lancashire, the first owner. Last taxed in 1999, the Ariel was purchased by the vendor that year, since when it has been dry stored. Recommissioning to a greater or lesser extent will be required before the machine returns to the road and thus it is sold strictly as viewed (the engine does not turn over). Offered with a V5C Registration Certificate. Key not required Footnotes: All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.
