A large elm, yew and beech Windsor chair formerly belonging to the celebrated comedian, satirist and screenwriter Peter Cook (1937-1995) Probably late 19th century Of typical form, with a pierced baluster vase shaped splat, on splayed ring turned baluster legs, 64cm wide x 53cm deep x 131cm high, (25in wide x 20 1/2in deep x 51 1/2in high) Footnotes: Provenance The offered lot was purchased in New York during the early 1960s whilst Peter Cook was starring in the renowned 'Beyond the Fringe', at the time this highly popular comic stage revue was showing on Broadway. Thereafter, Peter Cook brought the present chair back to his London residence, where he used it in his study. It is believed that he worked on the vast majority of his subsequent writings from this chair; including his material with Dudley Moore, John Cleese and a number of other famous comedic individuals of the period. The chair moved together with Peter Cook through various property re-locations and transfers of address, but was apparently always used at the actor's desk. When the current owner and vendor separated from Cook, the former kept the chair whilst the latter held on to a three piece sofa instead. Since that time, the chair has remained a cherished possession of the current owner and vendor, who was married to the famous satirist between the years 1973 and 1989. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TP TP For auctions held in Scotland: Lots will be moved to an offsite storage location (Constantine, Constantine House, North Caldeen Road, Coatbridge ML5 4EF, Scotland, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue.
