18kt Gold Cased Compass Arthur G. Wiseman (1835-1908), St. Louis, Missouri. Impressed 'A.G. WISEMAN / ST. LOUIS' inside cover; engraved 'WISEMAN / ST LOUIS' on dial. Each side of case engraved with fine net pattern, the top centering a bright-cut engraved oval reserve, wd. 2, dp. 5/8, ht. 2 3/4 in. Footnotes: Provenance Reputed to be a gift from Joseph C. Kirkbride (1840-87), the owner of drug store in St. Louis, Missouri, to Isaiah George Washington Steedman (b. 1835, Lexington County, South Carolina; d. 1917, St. Louis, Missouri). Steedman was Colonel of the 1st Alabama Infantry Regiment, C.S.A., during the siege of Port Hudson, Louisiana, 1862-3. He removed to St. Louis shortly after the war, practicing medicine there until his retirement in 1880.
