Federal Mahogany and Mahogany Veneer Secretary Bookcase, possibly Massachusetts, early 19th century. The upper case crowned with pedimented cornice supporting three urn-turned finials on plinths and matched veneer frieze between bead molding, over two glazed and mullioned doors, each with three pointed arches in through-tenoned frames, opening onto interior of two adjustable shelves, the bottom of case containing a string-inlaid prospect door flanked by tambour doors opening onto column of two drawers over three valanced compartments; resting on molded top of lower case with leaf across front opening to form desk surface, over case with cockbead-molded lopers and four graduated drawers with string-inlaid and veneered fronts, fitted with brasses press-molded to depict a shepherd warding off a wolf and impressed '1956' on bails, all raised on French feet with serpentine skirt and returns, (restoration), excluding finials, 88cm wide, 48cm deep, 195cm high (35in wide, 19 1/4in deep, 77in high).
