Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (French, 1864-1901) Elles (Wittrock 155 III; Adriani 171 IV; Delteil 179) Lithograph in colours, 1896, on thin wove paper, Wittrock's third and final state, from the poster edition of an unknown size, published by Gustave Pellet, Paris, framed Sheet 613 x 475mm (24 1/8 x 18 3/4in) Footnotes: Provenance Bruno Cassier, Berlin (1872-1941), publisher and collector. Thence by descent to the present owner. These posters were used to advertise the exhibition of the Elles portfolio, which opened on 22 April 1896 in the Salon des Cent at the offices of La Plume. Adriani reports that the size of this edition is not known, remarking that there would have been circa 1,000 examples, some numbered, some with the monogram stamp of the publisher (Lugt 1190 or 1191).
