Henri Matisse (French, 1869-1954) Odalisque couchée (Duthuit 86) Etching, 1923, on wove paper, an unsigned trial proof aside from the six recorded signed proofs (there is a printed signature in the plate; there was no edition), with full margins, framed Plate 200 x 298mm (7 7/8 x 11 3/4in) Sheet 450 x 574mm (17 3/4 x 22 5/8in) Footnotes: Duthuit remarks that a trial plate was designed for the project for a book to be published by Ambroise Vollard which was never completed. The copper plate remained in the property of the French publisher and an edition was never released; only six proof are recorded to have been signed in pencil in the lower right margin, two on Arches, two on Japon and two on Chine papers.
