After Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973) Côte D'Azur (Czwiklitzer 177) Lithographic poster in colours, 1962, on wove paper, from the edition of 15,000 (some impressions were printed with 'Cannes A.M', some with 'Côte D'Azur'), designed by the artist and Henri Deschamps, Lith., printed by Mourlot, Paris, published by the Ministry of Transport and Public Works, France, the full sheet Sheet 999 x 656mm (39 3/8 x 26in) Footnotes: This work is after one of the oil on canvas titled 'Les Pigeons', executed by Picasso in 1957. He painted nine other variations on the theme, currently in the collection of the Museu Picasso in Barcelona. This series of paintings was an interlude for the artist in a period when he was fully immersed in reinterpreting 'Las Meninas' by Diego Velázquez, a project that he almost became obsessed with. Doves had been a favoured subject of the XX Century Master, who took on drawing them since childhood, probably inspired by his father's artworks as well. In the series, he plays with variously arranging them in the frame of a window opened on the Bay of Angels, using a motif dear to the friend Henri Matisse, who had passed away two years before and had, incidentally, gifted him two doves before his passing. This version of 'Les Pigeons' was chosen five years later by the French Ministry of Public Works and Transports as the background of their advertising campaign for the Côte D'Azur area. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: AR AR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium.
