Of Scottish 1869 Gold Rush interest: A pair of Kildonan gold and gemset pendent earrings Designed with the St Andrew's cross engraved with celtic style decoration overlaid with a crown set with emeralds and green paste stones suspending from a double fine link chain to a single stud, 34mm long, stamped to the reverse Kildonan 1869 Footnotes: Kildonan in Sutherland became the centre of Scotland's own gold rush in 1868. A local man, Robert Gilchrist, having returned from the gold fields in Australia discovered gold whilst panning the Kildonan and Suisgill burns. Within months hundreds of gold hunters descended on the area whereby the Duke of Sutherland introduced a licence system in 1869. By the end of the year reserves were dwindling and no new licenses were issued as other uses for the land such as shooting, fishing and grazing sheep were financially more viable.
