Royal Interest An Elizabeth II silver compact retailed by Cartier Padgett & Braham Ltd, London, 1954 Of shallow square form and with all-over engine turned surface, centred by a gold cypher: EIIR under a crown, the hinged cover opening to reveal a mirror, in fitted red leather Cartier case, the lid with the royal monogram, together with two newspaper cuttings and a letter of provenance from the current owner, height 7.7cm, length 7.7cm. Footnotes: This silver compact was a gift from the Queen to the royal nanny, Helen 'No Nonsense' Lightbody. Miss Lightbody took charge of Prince Charles soon after his birth in 1948 and later looked after Princess Anne. She gained reputation as a strict disciplinarian during her eight years in Royal service but in 1956 she overstepped the mark. The queen had sent a request to the kitchen for a particular pudding which she thought Prince Charles would like. Miss Lightbody didn't approve and had the pudding removed from the menu. When the queen found out, Miss Lightbody's employment was swiftly terminated. Despite the ignominious nature of her departure from Royal service, Prince Charles continued to visit Miss Lightbody and her and she was invited to his investiture as Prince of Wales in 1969 and also and to his 21st birthday party. The compact was given by Miss Lightbody to a friend in the early 1980s. Helen Lightbody died in a nursing home in Hawick in 1987, near her birthplace of Jedburgh in the Scottish borders.
